On January 17, 2017, Papaw Don went to be with Jesus. At 95, his mind was sharp as a tack and he was still living in the same house he had been in for over 50 years with Mamaw. Not many people can say they are still living on their own at this age. He and Mamaw were a sweet couple and they were always looking out for one another. Papaw loved pictures and frequently asked for multiple copies so he could send them to his relatives. He loved hearing about what the kids were involved in and always kept up with their sports! He truly cared about each and every one of us.
Richard was able to fly down the Sunday before he passed. Each of his grandkids were able to see him before the medicine set in and he drifted off to sleep. I believe he was waiting to see them all before he passed. Richard had a great day with him and I know he is grateful for that sweet time.
We buried Papaw Don on January 22, 2017. There was a wonderful turnout for visitation as many stopped by to love on the family and pay their respects to Papaw. The area was adorned with pictures of his family...just what he would have wanted.
The service for Papaw was a military service. We are so thankful for his service to our country and honored to be his family. Richard was asked to speak at the graveside service and did a wonderful job painting a picture of this beloved man and what he means to the family. The word that Richard used to describe him so well was "Present". Papaw was always "present". He attended all of the grandkids and great grandkids sporting events until his health wouldn't allow. When he couldn't physically attend, he would always make sure to get updates on how the games went. When you would go visit him, he was always "present". Always "present" in conversation and truly interested in you. We love you Papaw and we will see you again someday!
Although Papaw is now in Heaven, we get to enjoy more time with this precious lady. Prayers for Mamaw as she moves on without Papaw. Until they meet again...
